Tonight, the video for Beyonce's lead single Run the World (Girls) from her upcoming album 4 premiered. While the song itself may have been a terribly weak single, especially as the lead for the album, the video definitely redeems Beyonce.
The song itself is very minimal and slightly reminiscent of Single Ladies. Due to being leaked, the single was rushed for release, debuting at a measly #33 on the Billboard Hot 100 in its first week...sadly making this its peak. Beyonce has the voice, the class, and the skills to compete with the likes of Katy Perry, Lady GaGa, Rihanna, and Britney Spears if not outperform them. Her skills are not well showcased in this single at all. I thought the label would learn by now due to the failure of similar singles such as Ring the Alarm and Diva, peaking respectively at #11 and #19. Many artists crawl back to what prompts success for them, much like Single Ladies did for Beyonce. However, as a legend, Beyonce should know she has a lot more to offer than this song. I hope the rest of her album 4, set to drop of June 28th, has much more to offer. The one positive of this song is the killer bass line on any good system. After quite a few listens, it'll begin growing on you. Give it a listen if you have yet to.
The video though has what one might refer to as a "GaGa-like" aspect. It has a weird dance routine, a plethora of weird imagery, and an extended version of the song to lengthen the video. One might fail to remember that Beyonce invented weird with her videos such as Diva. I personally enjoyed the video. Beyonce brings back the fierceness of past videos and a whole lot of attitude. At one point, she even blatantly flips off the camera.
Overall:
Song:3/5
Video: 4/5
